Packing essentials for Stockholm

Stockholm's weather varies dramatically by season — from -10 °C dark winters to 20 °C white-night summers. The rule in every season is layers: Swedish buildings are well-heated indoors, but stepping outside in winter can be a serious shock. A versatile mid-layer and a waterproof outer shell serve you well from April through October.

Gamla Stan's cobblestones are beautiful and hard on thin-soled shoes. Comfortable, grippy footwear matters year-round — and in winter, the cobblestones can ice over, so waterproof boots with good grip are essential from November through March.

Power: Sweden uses Type F sockets (EU 2-pin, 230 V). UK/US travellers need an adapter. Cash: Sweden is ~90% cashless. Bring a contactless Visa or Mastercard — you will barely need paper money. Keep a backup card as ATMs are becoming scarce.
