Sweden is ~90% cashless
Sweden is one of the world's most cashless societies. Contactless Visa and Mastercard are accepted in virtually every shop, restaurant, café, bar, museum and public transport system. You can comfortably visit Stockholm for a week without using a single banknote.
Bring a backup contactless card. ATMs are becoming scarce in Sweden, and some are out of service for long periods. Having a second card is strongly recommended.
Swish — not for tourists
Swish is Sweden's dominant mobile payment app for peer-to-peer transfers and many small vendors. However, Swish requires a Swedish bank account and BankID — it is not available to foreign visitors. Do not rely on it. Contactless card covers everything Swish does, for tourists.
Tipping culture
Tipping is not obligatory in Sweden. The standard approach is to round up to the nearest whole number, or add 5–10% for excellent service at a restaurant. Tipping is not expected at cafés, bars, or for taxis. Many restaurants now offer a tip prompt on the card machine — it is entirely optional.
VAT (moms) in Sweden
- 25% — standard rate (electronics, clothing, most goods)
- 12% — hotels and dine-in restaurants
- 6% — groceries and takeaway food (temporary reduced rate Apr 2026–Dec 2027)
VAT is always included in displayed prices — no surprises at checkout.
About the Swedish Krona
The Swedish Krona (SEK, symbol kr) is the official currency of Sweden. Sweden voted against joining the Eurozone in a 2003 referendum, so it retains its own currency despite being an EU member. The Krona is divided into 100 öre, although öre coins are no longer in circulation — prices are effectively rounded to the nearest krona in cash (if cash is used at all).
Quick reference (indicative 2026 rates): 1 USD ≈ 10.5 SEK | 1 EUR ≈ 11.5 SEK | 1 GBP ≈ 13.5 SEK.
