Day trips from Stockholm — what to know

Stockholm sits at the edge of one of the world's most beautiful archipelagos — 30 000 islands, islets and skerries stretching 80 km into the Baltic. The city is also well connected by train and bus to historic destinations including Uppsala (Sweden's oldest university city), Sigtuna (oldest surviving town) and Birka (Viking-age UNESCO World Heritage site).

Most archipelago ferries are operated by Waxholmsbolaget and are covered by the SL travel card — making them excellent value. Birka boat tours require a separate ticket and run May–September only. Uppsala and Sigtuna are accessible year-round by commuter train or bus.

Always check the last ferry or train return time before setting off — especially on smaller islands where services can be infrequent. Download the SL app and the Waxholmsbolaget timetable before you leave.
