Quick verdict
Best overall: May–early June and September. May brings long days (17+ hours), blooming parks and manageable prices. Early June delivers warmth before Midsommar crowds. September offers an Indian summer, fewer tourists and great value — often Stockholm's most underrated month.
Avoid if you hate crowds: Late June–July. Midsommar weekend (around 20–21 June) is when Stockholm goes on holiday — restaurants and attractions can be packed or closed. Hotels are at peak prices. July is warm and lovely but the city is also packed with visitors.
Best value: January–March. Lowest hotel rates, crisp cold, and the possibility of seeing the northern lights on clear nights north of the city. Stockholm's indoor museum scene is excellent.
Christmas markets (Dec): Skansen, Stortorget in Gamla Stan and the Old Town's cobbled streets are genuinely magical in December. Lucia on 13 December is a beautiful Swedish tradition. Book accommodation well ahead as December weekends sell out fast.
