Vaxholm day guide: ferry, fortress and the archipelago's gateway town
Stockholm: Vaxholm archipelago guided excursion & day trip
How do I visit Vaxholm from Stockholm?
Take a Waxholmsbolaget ferry from Strömkajen (1 hour). Your SL pass covers the fare on most services. Vaxholm has a preserved 19th-century wooden town, the Vaxholm Fortress, good restaurants, and kayak rental. Easily done as a full day trip; also works well as an overnight stay.
The archipelago’s first city
Vaxholm is the administrative capital of the Stockholm archipelago — a substantial claim for a town of 12,000 people, but one that makes sense when you understand the archipelago’s history. Vaxholm has been the gateway to Stockholm’s eastern sea approaches since the 16th century, when the Vaxholm Fortress was built to control the main shipping channel. The town grew up to service the fortress, then the fishing fleet, then the summer visitors who discovered it in the 19th century and have been coming ever since.
Today Vaxholm has the feel of an archipelago town that has remained coherent: wooden buildings in the Gustavian and Jugend styles, a seafront promenade with small boats moored alongside, a central square with cafés and a grocery shop, and the fortress standing in the channel in front of you as you arrive by ferry. It is not quaint in a twee way — it is functional and lived-in — but it is one of the most visually satisfying towns in the Swedish archipelago.
Getting there
Waxholmsbolaget ferry from Strömkajen: The standard approach. Several departures daily, first boat around 07:30–08:00 in summer. Journey time approximately 1 hour. Your SL transit pass covers the fare on most services — check the Waxholmsbolaget zone map before travelling. See the Waxholmsbolaget guide.
Strömma day tour: Commercial tours depart from Nybroplan and include guided commentary. More expensive than the public ferry but includes structure and on-board guide. See the Strömma vs Waxholmsbolaget comparison.

The ferry docks at Vaxholm’s main harbour (Hamnen). The town centre is immediately visible: the main square (Torget) is a 3-minute walk from the ferry pier, and the seafront promenade runs along the harbour edge. The fortress is visible in the channel opposite the harbour — a solid stone building on a small island.
The town layout is simple: the seafront promenade runs east to west along the harbour; the main commercial street (Hamngatan) runs north from Torget; the residential wooden streets fan out behind. Everything of interest is within easy walking distance of the harbour.
Tourist information: There is a small tourist office near the harbour (seasonal), but Vaxholm is easy to navigate without it.
What to see and do
Vaxholm Fortress (Kastell)
The fortress in the channel is Vaxholm’s defining landmark and genuinely worth visiting. Originally constructed in 1548–1550 on the orders of King Gustav Vasa (who needed to control the sea approach to Stockholm), it was rebuilt and expanded several times. Its most significant test came in 1719, when a Russian fleet attacked during the Great Northern War and was repulsed partly by the fortress’ guns.
Today the fortress is a museum covering its own history and the broader story of Sweden’s Baltic power period (Stormaktstiden). Getting there requires a small boat taxi from the harbour (approximately 50 SEK return, departures every 30 minutes in summer). Allow 1.5 hours for the crossing and museum visit.

The streets behind the harbour contain Vaxholm’s most characterful architecture: 19th-century wooden houses in yellow, red, and white, with elaborately carved details around doors and windows. This style of wooden urban building is distinctively Swedish and increasingly rare in Stockholm itself (where fire regulations and urban development have removed most of it). Vaxholm preserves a substantial section.
Walk along Hamngatan north from the square, then branch east along Prästgatan and the adjacent streets. The entire old town circuit takes about 45 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Kayak rental
Several operators near the harbour rent single and double kayaks by the hour or day. Kayaking from Vaxholm gives access to the channels and smaller islands around the town, and a different perspective on the fortress from water level. Half-day rental approximately 400–600 SEK per kayak.
For a more guided experience, several archipelago kayak tours depart from or near Vaxholm. See the archipelago complete guide for multi-day kayak options.
Swimming
The main public bathing area (badplats) is a short walk from the harbour. In summer, locals and visitors swim here from the jetty and the rocky foreshore. Water quality in the inner archipelago is good.
The museum
Vaxholm’s local museum (Vaxholms Hembygdsmuseum) is in one of the old wooden houses near the church. It covers the town’s history from fortress garrison to fishing community to summer resort. Entry is modest (50–80 SEK). Worth 30 minutes if you are interested in local social history.
Where to eat and drink
Rådhuskällarenare (Rådhusgränd): The best traditional Swedish seafood in Vaxholm. Herring preparations, shrimp, grilled fish. Outdoor terrace in summer.
Waxholms Hotell Restaurant: The classic archipelago hotel restaurant, with a terrace overlooking the harbour. Smörgåsbord lunch in summer.
Fiskarvillan: A small fish restaurant at the harbour, focused on freshly caught archipelago seafood. Reasonable prices, excellent quality.
Bageri och konditori: Vaxholm’s bakery produces excellent cinnamon rolls and cardamom bread. For a fika stop after the old town walk.
Practical logistics
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Ferry from Stockholm | 1 hour (Waxholmsbolaget, Strömkajen) |
| SL pass valid | Yes (most services) |
| Return ferries | Multiple per day; last service ~18:00–19:00 |
| Car-free | No (Vaxholm is an island but has road access) |
The return ferry: Unlike outer islands, Vaxholm has multiple return services throughout the day. But check the schedule before going — in low season, services become less frequent.
Weekend vs weekday: Summer weekends are busier, particularly on Saturday. If you prefer fewer crowds, a Tuesday or Wednesday visit is quieter.
Combining with other islands
Vaxholm works as a standalone day trip or as the first stop on a multi-island itinerary. From Vaxholm, Waxholmsbolaget ferries connect to several middle-archipelago islands — you can continue to Grinda or Finnhamn if you are staying overnight.
See the archipelago overnight guide for multi-island logistics.
Seasonal considerations
Summer (June–August): Peak season. All services operating, restaurants fully staffed, busiest on weekends. Fortress boat service runs every 30 minutes.
May and September: Excellent months — services operating but crowds significantly reduced. The September light on the archipelago is extraordinary.
October–April: Most restaurants and tourist services close or reduce significantly. The ferry runs year-round but less frequently. The fortress museum closes.
Frequently asked questions about Vaxholm
How long should I spend in Vaxholm?
A comfortable day trip — ferry out around 09:00, return around 17:00 — gives you 6–7 hours. That is enough for the fortress, an old town walk, lunch, and kayaking. An overnight stay gives you the evening atmosphere and morning quiet that day-trippers miss.
Is Vaxholm better than Grinda for a day trip?
Different. Vaxholm has more to do (fortress, town, restaurants) and is more accessible (1 hour vs 2.5 hours). Grinda has more nature, more swimming, and less tourist infrastructure. If you want a town experience with a archipelago backdrop, Vaxholm. If you want nature and quiet, Grinda.
Can I bring a bicycle to Vaxholm?
Yes. Bicycles can be brought on the ferry and are useful for exploring the island. Vaxholm island is small but has some interesting roads leading to quiet areas beyond the town.
Does the SL pass cover the Vaxholm ferry?
On most Waxholmsbolaget services to Vaxholm, yes. Check the current SL zone boundaries as coverage occasionally expands. A 72-hour SL pass (approximately 340 SEK) is very good value if you are making multiple ferry trips across your Stockholm visit.
Is there a sauna in Vaxholm?
Yes — Vaxholm has a traditional sauna with a polar plunge option at the harbour, popular in winter. See the Vaxholm sauna winter experience for details.
